I saw something last night that I have reflected on more this morning. Melanie and I were watching Micah play in his baseball game in Grenada. Micah's team was down 1 run, with the score 5-4. 1 out. Micah's on 2nd base. All alone. He takes a lead off of 2nd. What happened next was nothing uncommon in 11-12 yr old baseball. The pitcher throws the pitch to home. Micah takes off toward 3rd base for the steal. The catcher comes up throwing toward third and it's a perfect shot. The tag was applied as Micah slid into 3rd base. "He's out!!" Slowly, Micah jogs back to the dugout. The inning ends shortly with no runs scored.
Then what caught my attention was next. His third base coach (and head coach) said "I didn't tell him to run!!" At that moment, I realized that Micah had made a decision on his own. After the game, I asked Micah about the play. His response was, "I thought I could make it." I didn't beat him up about it. I did tell him he HAS to listen to the coach. And sometimes listening means "when the coach says nothing, that means you don't steal."
Listening to God is something we must constantly be in tune with. What we think is right may not be right in the timing. When we think we need to "move" or "take action", God is saying "be patient". And sometimes when we think we should be still, God is saying "Let's roll". We can't afford to get our signals mixed up. We can't afford to make the decision on our own. So many times, we will go to everyone for advice on a decision....except God. Or if we do, we go to him last. Our first thought, our first go-to should be to God. He knows what's going on. His perspective is different.
Micah and his team won the game. Micah even scored the tying run the next inning. It was fun. We learn along the way. We learn to watch. We learn to listen. We learn to see the "whole game". And along the way, we see that listening to who's in charge is what's best.
