My family and I ventured to Memphis on Friday evening for the Blue Man Group. We were highly anticipating this family time together.
Our evening started off with a kid-friendly dinner at Aldo's Pizza on S. Main in Memphis. It's a very short walk from the Orpheum. We ordered a large pizza (24"), which was plenty for our family of 4. The prices were decent at Aldo's as well. After dinner at Aldo's, we had a little time before the 8pm show. We got some Ice Cream for the kids at Maggie Moos. Good stuff!!
Now...on to the show!! First, the Orpheum: The Orpheum is a beautiful theater that is much larger than it looks. This was our second show to see here. Our seats are in the Mezzanine level (first balcony). This is a great place for kids, given that it isn't too loud there. You have a great view from basically any seat in that level. The Orpheum staff is super friendly, and are always willing to help if you have any questions.
The Blue Man Group: The show was phenomenal. This was mine and my son's second time to see them live. Our first time, we were on the 2nd row at Universal Studios in Orlando. The Blue Man Group is a great combination of percussion, great music, and extremely funny comedy. It is family friendly, but does have a few moments where there is some sexual innuendo in some of the comedy. I could go without this, but it is minimal. I don't think my kids picked up on any of it.
I would say that about 80-90% of the content of the show I had seen previously at the Orlando show. I realize that there are "staples" to every act. However, it has been 4 years since that show. I thought there would be more new material. This isn't a dig, just an observation. Our family absolutely LOVED the whole night. The show was 1 hr 40 minutes long, and was just right. It may could've been a tad shorter, given there was no intermission.
Overall: I'd give it an A or A+. Very family friendly. Love the concept. Incredibly creative!! And the interaction with the crowd is excellent. I'll see them again one day, but I'll give it a few years like I did this time.
