We began a time of revival today at Agricola Baptist Church. Jeff Eaton is leading our revival. He is pastor of Hope Community Church in Kentucky. After church, my family and I went to eat at Courtyard Lane (a local convenient store/restaurant). I was thinking as I was finishing up lunch that I would watch a little NCAA basketball this afternoon before church tonight. Well, I got home and here is the scenario: My son Micah is in mine and Melanie's room playing on the Playstation 2. My 13 month old daughter, I repeat 13 months old, is in the living room watching a DVD that she loves. Melanie is on the computer. I'm thinking to myself, "Where am I going to watch basketball?" So I proceed to my son's room and cut on the Dish Network satellite and catch a little of the Florida/Oregon basketball game.
Here's my point. Everyone in my family was involved in using some type of technology this afternoon. Wow!! From a 13 month old daughter, my 5 1/2 year old son, to my wife (who is 32), and myself (29) were all using something for entertainment. On one hand you could say, "What a shame...in our day we used to go outside and kick the can." That's cool. We love being outside. Matter of fact, we spent all day yesterday outside between the backyard and the ball field with games. However, I say, "Cool. It's amazing how we've integrated technology into our lives to make it more enjoyable." We worshiped this morning with "amped" instruments (piano and organ included). We used lighting technology, video production equipment, and even used these things in our children's Sunday small groups.
It takes nothing but a heart in love with Jesus to worship. It doesn't require all of the technology. However, God has given us things in life that enhance what we are active in. It's the culture that we live in. I say we embrace it.
